Why it matters
A September draft of the rules had included leniency for petrol cars weighing 909 kg or less, a carve-out that industry participants said would primarily benefit Maruti Suzuki given its share of the small-car segment. In a newer 41-page draft reviewed by Reuters, the Power Ministry dropped that exemption and also adjusted other design parameters, including limiting over-compensation for vehicle weight and setting a steeper emissions-reduction pathway for manufacturers’ passenger-vehicle fleets (under 3,500 kg).
