The Bombay High Court, on November 28, 2025, ordered an audit of construction sites in Mumbai to tackle the city's severe air pollution problem. The court highlighted that while a long-term strategy is necessary for overall air quality improvement, immediate actions can be taken to reduce dust pollution from construction activities. A five-member committee has been formed to inspect compliance with existing guidelines, which include the installation of air quality sensors and dust control measures. The committee will consist of officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), civil society representatives, and a public health official. The court expressed concern over poor compliance, noting that only 400 out of nearly 1,000 construction sites have functional air quality sensors. The court also directed the BMC to issue advisories for public protection against air pollution and suggested distributing masks in crowded areas. The next hearing is scheduled for December 15, 2025.
