Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 17, 2025

This policy explains what data OwlBrief collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and what choices you have.

Scope

1. Scope

This policy explains how OwlBrief (“we”, “us”) collects, uses and protects personal data when you use OwlBrief, including our website, applications, decision-ready briefs and Clarify with AI.

Data we collect

2. Data we collect

We collect the following categories of data:

  • Account data — name if provided, email address, hashed password, settings and subscription status.
  • Content and activity data — briefs and pages you view, topics you follow, likes, saves, shares, Clarify with AI questions and activity timestamps.
  • Source metadata — metadata about articles and sources we summarise, such as URL, headline, publisher, publish date and topic tags. We store our own structured summaries and metadata; we do not aim to store full publisher articles.
  • Technical data — IP address, device identifiers, operating system, browser type, language, approximate location derived from IP, logs and crash logs.
  • Communications — messages or emails you send to us, including support, feedback and partnership requests.
  • Optional integrations — if you explicitly connect third-party services or provide API tokens, we process the data needed to enable that integration.

How we use data

3. How we use data

We use personal data to:

  • Provide, maintain and improve OwlBrief and its core features.
  • Generate decision-ready briefs, topic tags and answers to your Clarify with AI questions.
  • Personalise topics, geographies, alerts and recommendations so OwlBrief stays relevant to you.
  • Monitor performance, debug issues and protect OwlBrief against abuse, spam and security threats.
  • Communicate with you about product updates, policy changes and support requests.
  • Process payments and manage subscriptions, where applicable.
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.

Automated processing

When you read a brief or ask a question, we may send parts of the article text, metadata and your question to inference providers that help generate briefs and responses on our behalf. We use these providers as processors for API-based services.

Legal bases, where applicable, include performance of a contract, legitimate interests, consent where required, and compliance with legal obligations.

Sharing and processors

4. Sharing & processors

We do not sell your personal data. We may share data in these limited situations:

  • Service providers — with providers that help us operate OwlBrief, including hosting, storage, logging, analytics, email delivery, customer support, payment processing and inference.
  • Inference providers — with third-party platforms that process content to generate briefs and responses on our behalf.
  • Legal and safety — where disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with law, legal process or government request, or to protect OwlBrief, our users or the public.

Publishers and content owners

For publishers whose content we summarise, we store metadata such as URL, headline and publisher name, plus the structured summaries we create. We do not claim ownership of the underlying articles. Publishers who want to discuss how their content is surfaced on OwlBrief can use the Contact section.

Cookies and tracking

5. Cookies & tracking

We use essential cookies and similar technologies to run OwlBrief, keep you logged in and protect your account. We may also use analytics cookies or similar tools to understand how OwlBrief is used and to improve it.

You can control cookies through your browser settings and, where available, our in-product cookie or preference controls. Disabling certain cookies may affect core functionality.

Retention

6. Data retention

We keep personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including providing OwlBrief, maintaining business records, resolving disputes, enforcing agreements and complying with legal obligations. After that, we delete or anonymise data unless we are legally required to keep it for longer.

Security

7. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data, including encryption in transit, access controls and least-privilege principles for internal access. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your rights

8. Your rights

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request correction or deletion of your personal data.
  • Object to or request restriction of certain processing.
  • Request a copy of your data in a portable, machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

Residents of certain jurisdictions, including the EU/EEA, UK or California, may have additional rights under local law.

To exercise your rights, email [email protected] . We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling your request.

International transfers

9. International transfers

OwlBrief may process and store data in countries other than your own, including through service providers and inference providers. Where required by law, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers, such as standard contractual clauses or equivalent mechanisms.

Children

10. Children

OwlBrief is not directed to children under 13, or any higher minimum age required in your jurisdiction, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children in that age group. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will take steps to delete it where required.

Changes

11. Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and may provide additional notice, such as in the app or by email. Your continued use of OwlBrief after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
