OKD closes Czech Republic's last hard coal mine

State-owned OKD closed the CSM hard coal mine in Stonava on Wednesday, ending nearly 250 years of hard-coal mining in the Czech Republic.
Why it matters
A final cart of black coal was hoisted from a depth of 1,300 metres. The CSM mine is located in Stonava near the Czech-Poland border and its tunnels and galleries extend for more than 1 million metres. State-owned OKD shut the operation, saying high production costs made it no longer economically viable. OKD is offering retraining to affected employees.
