German Bundestag approves €52 billion military expenditure to enhance Bundeswehr readiness
Why it matters
Germany's Bundestag budget committee agreed to a €52 billion military expenditure package to rapidly restore Bundeswehr combat readiness, following years of underfunding. The budget, exempt from public debt restrictions for several years, includes €21 billion for uniforms and protective equipment, €4 billion for 200 Puma infantry fighting vehicles, and acquisition of the Arrow-3 missile defense system developed by Israel and the US. Additionally, German defense firm Rheinmetall will receive €1.76 billion for a satellite-based reconnaissance system to support forces stationed in Lithuania on NATO's eastern flank. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that this move fulfills Germany's obligations to NATO and demonstrates leadership in European security.
