Google has officially launched Gemini CLI Extensions, a new feature for its command-line AI system, Gemini CLI, on October 8, 2025. This feature allows external companies, such as Figma and Stripe, to integrate their tools directly into the Gemini CLI environment. Unlike OpenAI's ChatGPT, which has a tightly curated app access, Gemini CLI Extensions can be published without Google's endorsement, fostering an open ecosystem. Developers can manually install these extensions from public repositories on GitHub. The first extension available is for Google's Nanobanana image generator, enabling users to generate images directly from the command line. Since its launch in June, Gemini CLI has attracted over one million users, primarily software developers, and is used extensively in maintaining Google's own codebase. The initiative aims to transform Gemini CLI into an extensibility platform, facilitating connections to various tools within developers' workflows.
