NTPC will set up a coal-to-synthetic natural gas facility at Talaipalli in Chhattisgarh with an investment of around Rs 10,000 crore, according to a senior company official. The project is planned as a 5 lakh tonnes per annum SNG plant spread over 150 acres and is expected to consume 25 lakh tonnes of coal from NTPC mines at Talaipalli. NTPC is seeking technology tie-ups for processes including coal beneficiation and gasification, and the technology part is expected to be finalised within the last quarter of FY26. In October 2025, NTPC announced an agreement with Engineers India Limited to develop a coal-to-SNG facility using high-ash Indian coal from NTPC captive mines.
