A What happened
A high-speed train crash in southern Spain, described as the country’s worst in more than a decade, has killed at least 42 people. The CIAF rail investigatory commission is analysing the cause after a train travelling north from Málaga derailed on a straight part of the route and collided with an oncoming train, which also derailed. The Spanish government called the accident “extremely strange.” Recovery efforts continued on Tuesday, with three bodies recovered from the wreckage and a 42nd victim found near Adamuz. The crash has prompted shock and confusion, particularly because Spain’s AVE high-speed rail network has long been viewed as modern, efficient, and safe, having been built with EU funds and inaugurated in 1992.
