TotalEnergies announced it has restarted construction of its $20bn LNG project at Afungi in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province after a suspension since 2021.

Why it matters
TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne and Mozambique President Daniel Chapo made the relaunch announcement at a ceremony near the Afungi site in Cabo Delgado. The project had been paused in 2021 due to security concerns linked to violence in the region. The development is described as one of Africa’s largest LNG projects and is designed for output of more than 13 million tonnes of LNG per year.
