US government to nix October inflation report after history-making shutdown
Why it matters
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has declared that it will not release inflation data for October 2025 due to the recent government shutdown. This unprecedented situation arose after the shutdown, which lasted nearly 43 days, hindered the collection of essential survey data. Although government funding has been restored, the BLS stated it cannot retroactively collect the necessary data for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Real Earnings summary. As a result, the November CPI report will also be delayed, now scheduled for release on December 18. The shutdown stemmed from a political impasse between Republicans and Democrats over government funding and healthcare issues. The Trump administration had warned that the shutdown would negatively impact economic data collection, potentially leading to significant consequences for policymakers and markets.
