Why it matters
Bangladesh is currently facing a wave of violence as tensions rise ahead of a court verdict for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Her party has called for a nationwide lockdown in response to the unrest. Schools in Dhaka and other major cities have moved to online classes due to severe transport disruptions. Authorities reported 32 bomb explosions and numerous arson attacks, including on government offices and a bank founded by interim Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus. Security measures have been intensified, with 400 soldiers deployed in the capital and public gatherings heavily restricted. Hasina, who fled to India during protests last year, is being tried in absentia for crimes against humanity, which she denies, claiming the trial is politically motivated. The violence has resulted in significant casualties, with the UN estimating around 1,400 deaths linked to the unrest. Yunus has announced plans for a referendum on a national charter to coincide with upcoming parliamentary elections.
