Why it matters
The Indian government has taken a significant step to strengthen its electronics manufacturing sector by approving the first seven proposals under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme. This initiative, announced by Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to produce essential components like printed circuit boards (PCBs), camera modules, and copper laminates domestically. The approved projects are expected to meet approximately 20% of India's domestic demand for multi-layered PCBs, 15% for camera modules, and 100% for copper clad laminates. This move is part of a broader strategy to create a self-reliant electronics supply chain and enhance India's manufacturing capabilities in key technology areas, ultimately reducing the country's reliance on imports for critical electronic components.
