How do you move a village? Residents of France’s last outpost in North America try to outrun the sea
Why it matters
Miquelon, a small French village in the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago, is facing relocation due to the imminent threat of rising sea levels caused by climate change. The village, which sits only two meters above sea level, has been under a coastal risk-prevention plan since 2014, which halted new construction. Following severe storms and the near miss of Hurricane Fiona, the local government, led by Mayor Franck Detcheverry, has initiated plans for relocation, supported by the French government’s Barnier fund. While the move is currently voluntary, nearly 50 residents have signed up, and construction of new homes is underway. The relocation aims to preserve the community's spirit while ensuring safety from climate threats, marking a significant step in addressing the impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations.
